These two startlingly contrasting regions in the west have very
individual charms. The Burren comprises a bright, dry limestone landscape
studded with a wealth of wild flowers, while Connemara is a land
of desolate bogs and mountains—harsh but inspiring. Everywhere
are sites of times past. We begin in Lisdoonvarna and explore Burren
National Park, with its limestone hills, Inagh Mountain, and Iron
Age hill fort. Then we take a boat to Inishmaan and walk through
a labyrinth of stone walls and a Celtic ringfort. Traveling on to
Connemara, we stay in the tiny village of Leenane, with views along
the fjord and visit Galway, the Connemara Mountains, Kylemore Abbey
and climb Leenane Hill.
